Making the Arsenal [Paperback]

Code: A9507

In 1910 Woolwich Arsenal FC, the forerunners of the club we know today, went into administration. They had slipped down the league, were in danger of relegation, and crowds were declining.
In fact things were so bad that there was a general feeling in football that this was the end of the line for London’s oldest league club.
Then, extraordinarily, the Mayor of Fulham, Henry Norris, who was already owner of two football clubs (including Fulham FC of the second division), attempted to buy Woolwich Arsenal and merge it with Fulham to create Fulham Arsenal, playing at Craven Cottage.
When the Football League turned the plan down Norris then brought forward a second plan, to have Arsenal to ground share with Fulham. With Norris as the only bidder for the club, the future of Arsenal hung in the balance.
“Making the Arsenal” tells the story of the club in 1910 through the eyes of a young Fleet Street journalist given the job of covering the demise of Woolwich Arsenal FC. It is written by Tony Attwood, who also writes the “Arsenal Uncovered” series in the club programme this season, and is in fact the only book that covers in detail how the club was taken to the brink in 1910, and how it finally stepped back from the edge.
